After being a fan of their’s for years, I finally bought nail polish from OOO Polish (Triple O) Nail Lacquers, which is formulated to compliment women of color’s skin tone. The first of my #NailMail was Mino (mauve pink), then a (discontinued) Melon pink, and Baol, (white).
There has been numerous occasions where I bought a nail polish, and was disappointed that the color didn’t compliment my skin tone like I’d originally hoped. Mainstream nail polish brands can sometimes be very misleading. Not only is this business unique and creative, but it’s very well needed.
On top of that, OOO’s founder Symantha Wechie-Onyechi and I both just celebrated our three-year anniversaries (Symantha’s May 13th, mine yesterday May 21st)! For Day 4 of my Annual Polished and Powerful Week, here’s a Q&A of the woman behind the brand.
What are your favorite colors to wear on your nails?
Symantha: “The shades that inspired OOO Polish’s creation were beautiful nudes shades, so I love yummy shades of brown!”
What is your go-to “all occasion” polish?
Symantha: “I really love a solid nude! ‘Askia Musa’ is a red-based nude that I can wear year around and anywhere!”
How often do you change your nail polish?
Symantha: “Since I have to test (and re-test) our shades to ensure they reflect your skin tone, I change my polish about 1-2 times a week!”
What are you wearing on your nails right now?
Symantha: “I have one of our best-sellers, Benin which is of course you know is….nude!”
Besides getting your nails done, what is your favorite way to pamper yourself?
Symantha: “I love giving myself ‘do-nothing’ weekends, where I don’t have to cook or clean, and watch Netflix all day! I also love love love travel! I’m an explorer so it pampers my soul!”
What time of day are you most productive?
Symantha: “Everyday! I always have a to-do list, but to ensure I don’t overwork myself, I try to pick 1-2 days a week where I take a break.”
Tell me about your proudest moment.
Symantha: “The first time a customer told me that I matched their skin tone perfectly, and finally gave them a true nude that reflected their beautiful brown skin. I actually didn’t realize that I would be so touched, I literally cried. It made my entire day!”
What advice do you have for future Girl Bosses?
Symantha: “I like to make advice quick and simple! Know who you are so no one else can tell you who you are. Authenticity is key. You cannot do it alone, you need a healthy minded team. Do it anyways! Consistency is key! Consistency! Consistency! The university of Google and YouTube are your friends! ‘Haters’ do not exist. Competition with others should not be the focus, compete with yourself. You can create your own dream and it can come to life!”
